Infertility Q & A
What is infertility?
Infertility is medically defined as the inability to get or stay pregnant after 12 months of trying, or six months of trying for women 35 and older. Pregnancy is a multi-step process that includes:
- Release of an egg from an ovary (ovulation)
- Movement of the egg through the fallopian tube to the uterus
- Fertilization of the egg by sperm as it travels through the fallopian tube
- Implantation of the fertilized egg into the uterus
You may be struggling with infertility if you or your partner can’t successfully complete one or more of these steps.
What causes infertility in women?
In most cases, women experience infertility due to problems with ovulation. If your periods are irregular, then you may not be ovulating every month.
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common cause of infertility in women. PCOS is a hormonal imbalance that affects normal ovulation and may cause fewer than eight menstrual cycles in a year.
Structural abnormalities, such as blocked fallopian tubes (including elective tubal ligation), problems with your uterus, or presence of a uterine fibroid (noncancerous tumor), may also lead to infertility in women.
What can I expect during an infertility evaluation?
You can expect a comprehensive evaluation when you come to see Dr. Ahmed with concerns about infertility. During your exam, he asks detailed questions about your gynecological and medical history, as well as your and your partner’s sexual history.
He then performs a physical and pelvic exam and may request diagnostic tests to determine the underlying cause of your infertility, such as:
- Bloodwork
- Hormone test
- Urinalysis
- Ultrasound
- MRI
Based on the information gathered during your evaluation, Dr. Ahmed develops a personalized fertility treatment plan.
How is infertility treated?
Your infertility treatment plan depends on the underlying cause of your inability to conceive. To improve ovulation, Dr. Ahmed may prescribe medication to stimulate ovulation.
He may also perform intrauterine insemination (IUI). During the procedure, Dr. Ahmed injects specially prepared sperm into your uterus. IUI may be performed in addition to the ovulation stimulation medication.
Dr. Ahmed also offers tubal ligation reversal surgery for women who want to restore their fertility after undergoing tubal ligation, or having their tubes tied. During the procedure, Dr. Ahmed reattaches the blocked segments of your fallopian tubes so sperm can fertilize the egg.
